What "Based" Really Means
Based describes someone or something that is confidently authentic, bold, and unapologetically themselves — regardless of whether it's popular or mainstream. Originally a negative term from rapper Lil B (the BasedGod), it was reclaimed to mean positive self-expression. In internet culture, "based" is used to compliment someone for stating an unpopular but respected opinion, or for acting in a way that's impressively self-assured. It's opposite is "cringe" — someone who cares too much what others think.
